Everyone likes saving money. But at what cost?
We did a search for “How To Replace An Old Electrical Outlet” on youtube. The results were scary to say the least.
Over 600 videos, with millions of views. If people knew the potential consequences of doing this, we hope they would be on the phone calling a qualified electrician right away. Doing your own electrical work is a seriously bad and dangerous-move for a number of reasons.
- Electricity kills — 110 volts is easily enough to kill you. And if somehow your own death and safety doesn’t scare you, please consider your loved ones.
- DIY electrical work is illegal — penalties for illegal electrical work cost thousands for individuals and up to $200,000 or three years imprisonment if deaths or injuries result from such illegal work.
- Faulty wiring cis dangerous — The biggest challenge is that it may work in the being. But bad wiring can be something closer to a time bomb. Bad wiring may go unnoticed for a long period before causing a problem resulting in electrocution or a fire.
And If theses dangers are not quite enough to convince you, because hey, you have insurance! Right?……
We have more bad news. If your house has a fire and it is found that you have been acting as a unlicensed electrician. Your home insurance will not be covering your claim due to negligence.
So what is classed as electrical work? Here is a short list that may surprise you.

So that basically to be safe, you can change a light bulbs decorate your Christmas tree. Any other work that involves electricity just simply isn’t worth the risk.
